1966 JDM Seiko 6206-8110 Automatic Weekdater (Kanji Day)
Seiko’s “Weekdater” line up from the 1960’s offer some of the cleanest layouts and most appealing designs to come out of the era. Mid-century modernity and minimalism that’s just as relevant today as it was when they were introduced more than 50 years ago. This 8010 model from March of ‘66 is a stunning example of Seiko’s timeless style and versatility. The classic stainless steel case with clean lines and long tapered lugs is topped with a polished fluted bezel that works in tandem with the dial to put on a veritable fireworks show of light with every movement of the wrist. The dial is a deep silver sunburst with a heavy radial grain beneath a glossy lacquer finish. The applied markers are polished and beveled baguettes, and both the day and date window are surrounded by a detailed polished frame. The hour and minute hands are broad polished dauphines, and a sleek tapered sweep counts the seconds. Aside from the polished Seiko badging, just two lines of small clean print embellish an otherwise sterile dial. As it’s a JDM variant, the day of the week in presented in full kanji text only with Saturday in a light blue, and Sunday in red. In keeping with its monochromatic arrangement, we’ve paired it with a soft gray suede with silver stitching that offers a comfortable fit and finish. It’s unpolished and completely original including a NOS Seiko replacement crystal, and post service is keeping near perfect time. The date can be quickset via the crown, and the day is semi-quickset. From casual to formal is an effortless transition for this Seiko stunner that’s sure to be an instant favorite in any rotation.
