After its “Olympic” release in 1964, Seiko’s World Time needed little in the way of improvement, but the engineers at Seiko sought to further perfect its design and set to work making refinements for what would become the 6217-7000’s direct successor... the 6217-7010. It was released in 1967, and this new variant had been fitted with a screw down case back rather than a “snap on” style. As well as luminous windows in the hands, the dial was given luminous plots just inside the markers for each hour. The crown had also been replaced with a slightly recessed style that was less prone to mishaps. Like the 7000, the 7010 was available in two color ways: A silver linen dial with black, blue, and red trim, and a charcoal sunburst with silver, blue, and brown trim. Though both are extremely rare, its typically the silver variant if one does surface. Far fewer of the charcoal dials were produced, and to happen upon one in any condition should be considered a rare treat to say the least. That said, you’ll understand our excitement at securing this example from November of 1967. Phenomenal is an understatement. The rich, charcoal sunburst dial is virtually perfect. The 24 hour track printed in silver and light brown is crisp and free of any chipping in the delicate paint. The “cities of the world” bezel is flawless and can be rotated smoothly in either direction via the crown. It’s counterpart is a fixed 24 hour hand that provides a flash of gold against the dark back drop, and the polished batons are free of oxidation or corrosion. As the crystal is a NOS Seiko replacement, it’s completely original and a collector’s dream. Post service, the 6217 is keeping near perfect time, and the case is crisp and unpolished. We’ve paired it with a chestnut brown leather with black stitching that’s an almost perfect color match to the dial. It is only the second example we’ve ever encountered, and quite possibly the last opportunity we’ll have to offer one here.
