1970 Seiko 6106-7117 Automatic 70m Sport Diver “Rally” (Resist)
Seiko produced no shortage of sport divers in the late 60's and 70's, but none so memorable and as sought after as those that carry the "Rally" distinction. So named for their checkered bezels and dials, they are an instantly recognizable combination of color and cool. This example from August of 1970 is no exception. The dial is a perfect silver sunburst with stepped monument markers finished in black and silver striping. Framing it, a steeply angled chapter with hour and minute blocking, and luminous plots on the hours. The hour and minute hands are polished and beveled batons that have retained their mirror polished finish and are free of oxidation or corrosion. The blaze orange sweep jumps out against the grayscale backdrop, and is free of chipping or paintloss. The barrel shaped case is unpolished with crisp edges and the original finishes are still clearly visible. The knurled bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with the perfect amount of resistance tension for keeping it in place once set. The “count up” insert is checked in silver and royal blue and shows virtually no sign of wear or fading. The original acrylic pip is intact, and the luminous has developed a warm cream patina. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, this is easily the nicest example of this “Rally” variant we’ve ever seen. It comes attached to the original “H” link bracelet in stainless steel, and post service, it’s keeping near perfect time. Do not wait on this one.
