1970 Seiko 6117-6409 Automatic “World Time” (GMT)

1970 Seiko 6117-6409 Automatic “World Time” (GMT)

Seiko's third iteration of a "world time" design came in the form of the 6400. It was available in a couple of color ways, but for us, the black and orange variant is certainly the list topper. The dial is a rich charcoal black with a linen texture, and a crisp lacquer finish. At its edge is a pumpkin orange 24 hour track that can be used in conjunction with the black and orange "cities of the world" inner bezel to determine the time anywhere in the world at a glance. The hands and applied markers are brightly polished aside from the bold red of the contoured GMT hand. The case offers great vintage appeal through its tonneau style architecture and large 41mm diameter. The crown is set flush against the case, and in the neutral position can be turned in either direction to rotate the inner bezel. This example from February of 1970 is completely original (aside from a replacement crystal), beautifully preserved, and an incredible bang for your “World Time” buck. It’s unpolished and we’ve paired it with a “shark tooth”  single-pass adjustable nylon in black with orange striping to complement the dial. The 6117B driving the hands is a true workhorse that’s built to last, has hacking seconds, and is keeping near perfect time post service. Dependable, and dripping with great vintage styling, its easily one of the coolest watches to have come out of the era.
