1971 JDM Seiko 6139-7012 Automatic Chronograph “5 Sports” Speed Timer
1971 JDM Seiko 6139-7012 Automatic Chronograph “5 Sports” Speed Timer
A versatile vintage racing chronograph, the 7012 is perfect for those looking to find one watch for all occasions. The case offers a slimmer profile than many others in the 6139 line up, and its soft tonneau shape is comfortable and well proportioned. This example from February of ‘71 is a knockout. At 41mm, its not overpowering, but has plenty of presence on the wrist. Above the “east to west” brushed finish of the mid-case, the polished and beveled bezel offers a stark transition that brings focus to the dial; a nearly perfect matte black surface with a textured finish and balanced color layout. The Speed Timer logo sits opposite the day (Kanji/English) and date window in the same fiery orange shared by the 1/5 second track at the dial’s edge. The minute register is a rich charcoal gray with a subtle sunburst effect, and a white block minute chapter adds striking contrast. The original luminous material on the markers and hands has developed a light cream patina, and the bright white hour and minute hands are easily legible at a glance. The chronograph hands pop in a flash of bright orange, and framing it all is a fixed tachymetric ring with a sweeping upward angle that creates depth. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service is keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive, and we’ve paired it with a black “tropic” that works perfectly against the dial and provides comfort on the wrist. A JDM Seiko classic, this Speed Timer transitions from the track to the office with ease and is sure to be a ‘go to’ on any roster.
