For vintage Seiko fans, it doesn't get any more iconic than the "Pogue." After purchasing his own 6139 at an exchange on base, Col. William Pogue trained for 6 months with his trusty new companion strapped to his wrist. It proved a trustworthy and reliable tool throughout rigorous simulations, and so was taken along side his NASA issued Omega Speedmaster Professional when he began his actual mission aboard Skylab. Today, “Pogue” is a catch all term used to describe any of the several variants within the 6139-60XX family, but for discerning collectors, only one stands out as the true “Pogue.” The very model that the Colonel himself wore during simulations and subsequently into orbit: A yellow “Resist” dial 6139-6005. His personal Seiko was sold at auction several years ago to one very fortunate new owner. This example from September of ‘71 is close as it gets to the original... Albeit, in much better condition. It is so close in fact, it was even produced in the same year and month as the Colonel’s own watch. An exciting detail for many, to be sure. The deep, golden yellow sunburst dial is stunning, and the original luminous material on the hands and markers shows only the slightest patina. The rotating inner bezel is a bright, vivid yellow, and the bezel insert shows very little wear and only a slight, even fade. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still intact. It comes attached to the original non-tapered “H” link bracelet for a seamless finish, and is completely original aside from a replacement crystal. Post service it’s keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are flawless. An unmolested “True Pogue” is an absolute grail for every collector. The opportunity to own such a stellar example so close in production? An event we wont likely be able to repeat.
