1971 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “True Pogue” (Resist)
For vintage Seiko fans, it doesn't get any more iconic than the "Pogue." After purchasing his own 6139 at an exchange on base, Col. William Pogue trained for 6 months with this trusty new companion strapped to his wrist. It proved a trustworthy and reliable tool throughout rigorous simulations, and so was taken along side his NASA issued Omega Speedmaster Professional when he began his actual mission aboard Skylab. Today, “Pogue” is a catch all term used to describe any of the several variants within the 6139-60XX family, but for discerning collectors, only one stands out as the true “Pogue.” The very model that the Colonel himself wore during simulations and subsequently into orbit: A yellow “Resist” dial 6139-6005. His personal Seiko was sold at auction several years ago to one very fortunate new owner, so this example from December of ‘71 is about as close as one can hope to get to the original. The rich, golden yellow sunburst dial is amazing. Other than the typical oxidation ring at the transition to the sub register, there are only two pin-point blemishes in the finish. The luminous plots have developed a dark spotty patina throughout, but that does little to detract from the condition overall. The hour and minute hands have retained their polished finish, and the original luminous material is still a clean, bright white. The chronograph hands are a deep red, and free of any chipping or paint loss. The rotating inner bezel is a bright, vivid yellow, and rotates smoothly in either direction via the crown. The outer bezel shows only very slight wear, and had faded just enough to give the blue portion that coveted “turquoise” hue. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still crisp and clearly visible. It’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are responsive with a snappy reset. We’ve paired it with a premium dark brown grain leather with “Pepsi” stitching to partner the bezel, and provide a comfortable fit and finish. A “True Pogue” is an absolute grail for almost every collector, and this one is certain to be a centerpiece in any lineup.
