1973 Seiko 7006-7159 Automatic Day/Date (Sales Sample Build Out)

During the 1970’s and 80’s, Seiko sales representatives would present new product to retailers by way of non-working samples. They would include the case, dial, hands, and crystal. Seiko understood the importance of a retailer being able to make the best judgement possible when choosing upcoming products for their cases. Several times a year, I will encounter a handful of these samples, and acquire them for parts. Every once in a while, I’ll get the uncontrollable urge to build one out to a finished, working watch. This 7006 sample from February of ‘73 is a perfect example. The case components are in near mint condition, and paired with a fiery orange cross hair dial, it was irresistible. Because the hands had been positioned at 10:08 for decades, a very subtle luminous burn developed on the dial beneath the hour hand. It’s so light that it might go unnoticed, but I thought it was worth mentioning, and can be seen pictured above. Just beyond the applied hour markers is a thin black minute track with clean white hashes and creamy lume plots at the hours. The polished hands are long and lean and striped in black for contrast. The sweep is a slender glossy black, and reaches straight through the chapter. The case shape is classic Seiko with integrated lugs, a contoured profile, and a steeply beveled mineral crystal. The 7006 movement installed is keeping near perfect time post service, and all parts are original Seiko material. To partner with the dial, we’ve paired it with a textured black grain leather clean and versatile finish. A fairly rare catch in any condition, this one is an absolute stunner that’s guaranteed to be a conversation starter wherever it lands.
