1974 Seiko 6119-6023 Automatic “5 Sports” Sport Diver
1974 Seiko 6119-6023 Automatic “5 Sports” Sport Diver
Seiko’s early “5 Sports” Divers from the mid 70’s are easily one of the best values on the vintage market. For those after a sporty, tool watch that’s everything but cumbersome on the wrist, the 6119-6023 may be the perfect addition. At 38mm, it’s compact and comfortable, and packed with appealing features. This example from January of ‘73 is phenomenal. The dial is an immaculate cobalt blue sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish and well proportioned text. The hour markers are spotless luminous plots and are separated by a subtle silver minute track. The hours and minutes are counted on polished batons, and a bright red “lollipop” sweep tracks the seconds. Framing the dial is an angled inner “count up” bezel which can be rotated via the crown. The case is a classic tonneau and shows some wear marks, but the corners and lines are crisp and the original finishes still clearly visible. The case back screws down securely and the markings are clear and legible, though there is some tool marring along the outer edge. The 21j 6119 inside is a true seiko workhorse that’s both durable and reliable. It offers quickset of both the day and the date, and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a khaki canvas over leather that nicely complements the dial, and provides comfort and versatility on the wrist. Unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, its a classic stunner that’s sure to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
