1975 Seiko 0624-5009 Quartz LC Digital “Lemon Drop”
Seiko has some pretty incredible “firsts” under their belt, and without question, we jump on every opportunity to offer you tangible connections to their amazing history. A simple digital LCD watch may not seem impressive by today’s standards, but in 1973, it was the type of ground breaking technology that could upend the entire watchmaking industry. The very first six-digit LCD display the world had ever seen was Seiko’s 06LC. It garnered attention the world over as a breakthrough technology. It marked the first time that the electrical pulses from a quartz movement could be sent straight to a liquid crystal display and converted to digits so efficiently that the time, and even the seconds, could be constantly displayed. Production was limited, and it was only available for the Japanese market, but Seiko immediately set out to refine the design further, and begin exporting LC technology to the rest of the world. Just one year later would see the release of Seiko’s first commercially available LCD watch available in the US, the 0624-5009. Known to collectors as the “Lemon Drop,” so named for the lemon yellow gel screen between the display and the crystal, they have become highly sought after pieces approaching “grail” status for many. After getting my hands on this example from May of ‘75, I immediately understood. I wanted to wear it the moment I saw it. It took several months to get it complete, but a worthwhile venture to be sure. The crystal was heavily scratched and chipped, but I was able to source a NOS replacement from a generous colleague. The bracelet was also damaged in several sections, so I patiently waited for a correct replacement to present itself. The result is a clean and complete example of a Seiko first worthy of any collector. The design is futuristic and timeless at the same time. The original bracelet was a must, as it’s solid and articulated link design creates a seamless flow throughout the entire watch. The bright green/yellow display is sharp with crisp contrast, and below it, two buttons allow access to the few functions available. The left button activates an incandescent bulb that lights the display for legibility in the dark, and when the toggle switch on the right side of the case is pulled, the right button cycles through minutes, hours, and seconds, and the left button advances each display. All functions are operating correctly, including the backlight, and its keeping perfect time. An interesting and important relic from one of Seiko’s most influential innovations, this 0624 is a must have for any collector.
