1976 Seiko 6138-3002 Automatic Chronograph "Jumbo"
1976 Seiko 6138-3002 Automatic Chronograph "Jumbo"
There's no mistaking how the 6138-3002 got its nickname, and at 42mm the "Jumbo" has certainly earned it. It's size, however, is in scale with its sophistication. The matte black tri-level dial is trimmed in lean contrasting markers, and is framed perfectly by the understated and steeply angled chapter. The white hour and minute “pencil” style hands offer seamless balance, but its the sunny yellow chronograph hands that bring this layout to life. The case is finely detailed, and features a mix of finishes and contours that create a powerful presence that’s still intentionally subdued and understated. It’s powered by Seiko’s 6138 which adds a 12 hour totaler, independent quickset of both the day and the date, and a manual winding feature not found on its predecessor. This example from December of ‘76 is a knock out. The case is unpolished, and though it shows some light wear, the original factory finishes are still clearly visible throughout. It is completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are smooth and the action is crisp. We’ve paired it with a smooth tan leather with black stitching that makes for a clean modern finish and lends great versatility to an already timeless design. It is a “must have” variant for any collector, and a list topping contender for those looking for a single watch to fill every need.
