1976 Seiko 6139-6040 Automatic Chronograph (Champagne)
1976 Seiko 6139-6040 Automatic Chronograph (Champagne)
Occasionally, I’ll be fortunate enough to stumble onto a piece that needs no introduction. It’s rarity and demand are known quantities, and the struggle of whether to offer it for sale, or maintain a muscle cramp inducing, eternal death grip is very real. Case in point, this 6139-6040 from March of 1976. It was available in two color-ways, however, both were only produced for a very short time. We’ve managed to get our hands on a couple of the orange variants over the years, but the champagne dial has eluded me altogether until now. Though not strictly a JDM model, most were sold on the domestic market. This one appears to have been produced for the Asian market, and the original Stelux bracelet makes it a likely Thong Sia exclusive. Of the few I’ve seen available in the last few years, nothing has come close to this condition. The matte sunburst champagne dial is hypnotic. It’s contrasted by a cushion shaped minute register at six in a “north/south” grained linen finish shared with the day/date window. The double chapter framing consists of a matte silver minute track, followed by a flat black “count up” marked in five minute increments. The outer bezel is a familiar tachymeter scale, only in a unique black and silver. As with almost every other example, the silver portion is blank as the white markings were fairly easily worn away. It is unpolished, and the case lines and corners are still very sharp. Post service, it’s keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are snappy and responsive. The original bracelet is a solid “Y” link Stelux with a brushed finish, and the “Speed Timer” style clasp. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and for those who know, this sought after grail is one time opportunity.
