1977 Seiko 6139-7100 Automatic Chronograph “Darth Vader/Helmet”
1977 Seiko 6139-7100 Automatic Chronograph “Darth Vader/Helmet”
Seiko delivered no shortage of racing inspired chronographs in the 1970's, and the "Helmet" is no exception. Though earning it's nickname from the helmet shaped profile of it's unique case, it looks much more like it was ripped from the dashboard of a 1970's touring car. Set deep beneath the angular mineral crystal sits a matte black dial trimmed in an array of colors, but with a very familiar layout. Much like an automotive speedometer, the seconds are displayed numerically on the inside edge of the hourmarkers. Trimmed in gold, the minutes of the sub register are marked out in a digital green and totaled by a slender yellow tapered baton. The hour and minute hands are black and white and off set by a bright yellow chronograph sweep. At the edge of the dial is a steep flat black tachymetric ring with the scale laid out in a flat white. On the original "Fishbone" bracelet, this example from October of ‘77 is complete, and an absolute stunner. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal. The case shows some light wear throughout, but the original machined finish is still clearly visible, and the corners are razor sharp. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. A perfect presentation of vintage racing for the wrist, this one is sure to move as fast as it looks.
