1983 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Diver “Turtle”
1983 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Diver “Turtle”
If it came down to owning just one watch, there’s no question that Seiko’s 6309-7040/49 is a strong contender. Still their top selling diver to date, it’s a tool watch so perfectly executed, it remains firmly at the top of our list. Balance, contrast, and contouring all neatly assembled into a finished product that is much greater than the sum of its parts. A bare bones beauty that more than proves that less can in fact, be so much more. This example from December of ‘83 is just about as good as it gets. The matte black dial is stunning. The hour markers are free degradation or discoloration, and the original luminous material is a clean bright white throughout. The hands have retained their mirror finish, and are free of any oxidation or corrosion. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert shows almost no visible wear. The case is unpolished and the factory finishes are still clearly visible with sharp corners and crisp edges. The case back has only a few light blemishes, and the original markings are still clear and well defined. Both the case back and crown screw down tightly with ample threading. The 6309A is keeping near perfect time post service, and ready for many more years of reliable service. We’ve paired it with a vintage genuine Z-22 that’s almost identical to the original strap for a proper fit and finish. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it is a true Seiko icon, and a must have for any collector.
