A subsidiary of Seiko since 1978, Pulsar was originally an outlet of innovation and premier quartz line. Offerings from the early to mid 1980’s are on par with some of Seiko’s best, but as the new decade approached, the magic of quartz technology had begun to fade and Pulsar was eventually repurposed as an entry level brand. By the early 90’s the Pulsar name had become synonymous with affordable durability and production cost had taken precedence over design. That said, there are a couple of styles from that era that are worth a second look, and if the right example presents itself, a fantastic addition to any roster. Seiko being Seiko, and Pulsar by extension, it was bound to be a dive watch, and in this instance, a rock solid pro model at a bargain basement price.   With only a few variations in a handful of color ways, Pulsar’s V736 200m Divers from the mid 90’s are a well kept secret, and a fun avenue for collecting as they are surprisingly rare. This example from April of ‘93 is a great place to start. Rugged construction and decidedly 90’s flair, its a beefy black diver with all the trimmings. The dial has large applied luminous plots, the hands are broad Seiko classics, and the bezel is a 120 click that’s easy to grip with satisfying action. The crown is well guarded and deep knurling makes its easy to screw down tightly. The case back is also screw down, and both help to protect the reliable Seiko V736 within. It offers day and date with independent quickset, as well as hacking seconds. The build quality is on par with the best Seiko divers of that era, and paired with a black and gray “Bond” paratrooper strap, it looks like it would be right at home in any 90’s action flick. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and keeping perfect time. At under $200, it’s a no brainer that’s much easier to appreciate than it is to track down.
