Ca. 1975 JDM Seiko 7015-6010 Automatic Chronograph “Time Sonar”
Seiko’s Daini division is synonymous with avant garde styling and innovative tech, however, I can only imagine what the reactions might have been as the first “Time Sonar” models came out of production. Different and forward thinking doesn’t quite do them justice. These models were built around three calibers; the 7015, 7018, and 2206 and any variant of either model is a worthwhile addition to any collection. I tend to favor the 7015 models for one very “clear” reason. Though all of them had tinted exhibition case backs (the first we see from Seiko), the 7015’s were also fitted with varying degrees of translucent dials. This allowed visibility of the day and date wheels behind the dial that created something resembling an analog version of a digital display. Make no mistake though, each is completely mechanical. This 7015-6010 is difficult to pin down a specific production date for, as with most Time Sonars, that information was printed along the edge of the tinted case back, and was prone to wear with age. We know, however, that most were produced in the early to mid 1970’s. The dial is the darker tinted variant, though the day and date wheels are still fairly visible under direct light. Zero is marked by a deep orange triangle at top center, and the hours are marked in slim white hashes. It’s framed by an hour and minute chapter that actually fits over the dial to secure it in place. Beyond that, a steeply set tachymetric scale provides a seamless outer border. The case, a seiko familiar, is a sloping tonneau with hooded lugs and rounded edges. The case back is a tinted acrylic lens thats secured in place by a screw down ring, and makes visible, the 7015 within along with its PVD black rotor. The hour and minute hands are bright white except for where they mount to the post, and this almost gives the appearance that they are floating just above the dial. The sweep hand has faded from orange to a golden yellow, but still pops nicely against the dial. The case appears to have been lightly refinished at some point, though not overly so. We’ve paired it with a camo canvas over leather that works nicely with the black and yellow, and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. All functions are operation correctly, including the “Flyback” chronograph reset. This allows resetting of the chronograph sweep while its still in motion without having to stop it first. If you’re looking to add some fun to your functional, this one wont disappoint.
