Seiko’s Crown line, along with the Marvel, evolved into the Kings and Grands that put the brand on the map as a top tier manufacturer. In the early 1960’s the Crown was just that; a representation of Seiko’s technical prowess packed neatly into a crisp mid-century package. As bargains go, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better one on the vintage market. With so many one-off, and avant garde dial variations, I couldn’t resist this stunning split concentric example from January of 1960. Beneath the glossy lacquer finish, tight rows of concentric silver circles create a textured sunburst that amazes from every angle. Just two lines of script print and lengthy carved hour markers add subtle and tasteful contrast. The hour and minute hands are broad, sloping dauphines that taper to a fine point. Polished and beveled, they are easy to find and well balanced for size. Counting the seconds is a long and slim sweep that nearly reaches into the minute track. The case is a classic layout with a slim profile and thin bezel for an “all dial” architecture. The lugs are long and tapered, and the original “S” crown is just the right size to allow for easy winding and setting without being cumbersome on the wrist. The hand wound cal. 560 is a 21 jewel, finely finished movement that, post service, is keeping time to within a few seconds per day. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and we’ve paired it with an olive suede leather for a casual, but crisp finish. Vintage minimalism at its finest, it’s earned its name, and a spot in any rotation.
