Most would consider the 62MAS Seiko’s first true diver, and as it was rated to a depth of 150m, it was most certainly their first attempt at a submersible with as much function as it had form. Prior to that historic release, though, Seiko offered a truly stunning light diver series by way of the “Silver Wave” models. They are at the very root of Seiko’s passion for dive watches, and were even the first to bear that familiar “Tsunami” logo on the case back. This example from October of 1964 represents the second generation of that series, and is a stunning mix of preservation and patina. The case is classically styled with tapered, beveled lugs, a round frame, and by diver standards, a somewhat thinner profile. The original crown is a large knurled style that protrudes from the four o’clock position, and in addition to setting the time, it can be rotated in either direction to set the inner countdown bezel. The dial is a silver white sunburst with polished applied markers that’s developed a scattered oxidized patina. All of the luminous material is the original, and has mostly retained its signature mint green color. The broad dauphine hour and minute hands are tapered to a fine point with large luminous windows, and a slender polished sweep counts the seconds. The case back is the etched style that typically didn’t survive the rigors of daily wear, especially after more than 50 years of service, but this example still shows all of its original markings, including the “tsunami” logo at center. Unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it’s keeping near perfect time post service, and we’ve paired it with a black “tropic sport” style strap for a clean, period fit and finish. The foundation of the Seiko diver empire, the Sportsmatic Silver Wave is a necessity for any true enthusiast, and this one is bound to be the new frontrunner on any roster.
