1971 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “Blue Pogue/Cevert” (Resist)
1971 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “Blue Pogue/Cevert” (Resist)
For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. For collectors, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. This stunner from July of ‘71 is amazing. The rich, velvety blue dial captivates from every angle, and would be flawless except for a careless re-setting of the hour hand that caused the tail to drag a very light circle where it made light contact with the dial. It is only along the surface, and doesn’t break through the paint at any point. Though it’s difficult to make out without proper lighting, I have taken it into consideration for pricing. As it’s an early variant, the dial carries the 70m Resist designation at left center. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and remains a clean, bright white with almost no discernible patina. The rotating inner bezel is a vivid black with crisp silver markings, and shows no fading from UV exposure. The polished hour and minute hands are free of oxidation or corrosion, and the luminous material within is a close match to that of the dial markers. The chronograph hands are a fiery brick orange that is both complementary, and in perfect contrast to the dial. The outer bezel in crisp, metallic red and blue bears only a few small blemishes, and little to no color fade. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and the original factory finishes still clearly visible. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original non-tapered “H” link bracelet and end links for a complete fit and finish, and is bound to be a prized addition to any collection.
