1972 JDM Seiko 6138-0011 5 Sports Speed Timer “UFO/Yachtman”
1972 JDM Seiko 6138-0011 5 Sports Speed Timer “UFO/Yachtman”
The term "Yachtman" appears to have been of questionable origin as it pertains to this particular chronograph, and clearly because it looks right at home trackside, far from any body of water suitable for yachting. Without a doubt, the 6138-0011 Speed Timer is 1970's racing for the wrist. From April of ‘72, this is hands down, the cleanest Speed Timer example we’ve offered. The dial is absolutely flawless. In a subtly textured flat black, it’s off set by opposing sub registers in matte silver without a hint of the typical discoloration from oxidation. The larger of the two registers totals elapsed minutes, while it's smaller partner above tracks total hours. The hour and minute hands are the longer flat black “pencils” tipped in white, and gliding around the dial, a long and slender canary yellow sweep. The luminous material is the original and sports an even cream patina throughout. The case is a beastly 44.5mm of sloping contours and smooth case lines. It’s unpolished, with sharp lines and crisp corners, although the case top finish appears to have been touched up. The bezel insert is finished in black with a metallic red inner track and silver tachymeter scale. The 6138B offers independent quick set of both the day and date, and can be both manually and automatically wound. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive and post service, its keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original JDM “H-Link” bracelet with rolled hinges and a “5 Sports” clasp. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, this is about as good as it gets, and is sure to be highlight on any roster.
