1972 Seiko 6117-6410 Automatic “World Time” (GMT)
1972 Seiko 6117-6410 Automatic “World Time” (GMT)
Seiko's third iteration of the "world time" design came in the form of the 6400/9. It was available in a handful of color ways, including this scarcely seen gold variant. In a market where a proclivity towards cold stainless steel is overwhelming, the right counterpart in warm yellow tones can provide a welcome diversion from the norm. This example from September of ‘72 is exactly that. The dial is a flawless ivory linen with a glossy lacquer finish. At its edge is a flat black 24 hour track that can be used in conjunction with the "cities of the world" inner bezel to determine the time anywhere in the world at a glance. The hands and applied markers are brightly polished and finished with black striping throughout. Subtle touches of color come from the contoured GMT hand in red, along with the red and blue flourishes along the inner bezel. The case offers great vintage appeal through its tonneau style architecture and large 41mm diameter. The plating on the front is complete with virtually no signs of wear through, though as is common with plated models, the back of the case shows some moderate wear. The crown is set flush against the case, and in the neutral position can be turned in either direction to rotate the inner “cities” bezel. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and we’ve paired it with an oiled sienna suede that blends nicely with the gold case.. The hacking 6117B is a workhorse movement built to last, and is keeping near perfect time post service. A Seiko classic with a history as rich as its finish, it is sure to be right on time, anywhere in the world.
