For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. For collectors, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From January of ‘76, this is an overall fantastic example. The rich, velvety blue dial is near perfect. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and still a crisp bright white with only hints of a developing patina. The rotating inner bezel is a rich and even charcoal gray with crisp silver markings, though there is a single scratch that runs through the 12 minute hash mark. The hour and minute hands have retained their polished finish, but some light scuffing is visible. The luminous material within has begun to develop some color, but is free of degradation or corrosion. The bright red chronograph hands are free of any chipping or paint loss. The outer bezel exhibits moderate wear throughout, and the navy and red have faded to royal and pink. The markings are still complete and legible. The case is unpolished and shows some signs of wear, but the factory finishes are still clearly visible and the corners are still quite sharp. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and crown, and post service is keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original tapered “H” link bracelet for a comfortable and complete fit and finish. A great example with a bit of character, it’s sure to find a regular spot in any rotation.
