For all of Seiko’s successes abroad, back in Japan, Citizen was never more than a step behind at every turn. Like Seiko, Citizen built it’s brand through the inevitable benefits of vertically integrated manufacturing, and timeless design. Many Seiko calls were met with a Citizen response that proved they could not only play the song, but even add a note here and there. Case in point, this 52-0110 150m “Challenge Diver” from April of 1977. As Citizen’s answer to the 6309-7040 150m “Turtle,” it’s a capable contender with four more jewels, and a hand winding feature absent on the iconic Seiko. There’s good reason it’s hands down the most widely sought after diver’s model in the vintage Citizen stable, and available examples don’t get much better than this. A one owner watch, it belonged to a Lt. Commander in the US Navy who purchased it new in ’77 as a seaworthy companion to accompany him throughout his career. A cherished possession we were proud to acquire , it’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement strap. We carefully polished the mineral crystal by hand, taking care to remove as many blemishes as we could while maintaining the sharply beveled edge. The bezel insert is among the nicest we’ve observed, and the case is factory crisp. The dial and hands are unbelievable, with no discoloration to the original mint green luminous in the markers and hands. Post service, the 8210A is keeping near perfect time, winds and sets smoothly, and offers quickset of the original red date.
