1978 Seiko 7546-603F Quartz “Sports 100” 100m Sport Diver (Inner/Outer Box, Original Receipt)
The build quality and design of Seiko’s early quartz Sport Divers is undeniable. If you’re looking to get some of Seiko’s best at a bargain, we’d urge you to set aside any notion of its present day entry level offerings, and discover a sweet spot of the vintage market that is earning collector demand at unprecedented pace. Consider this “Sports 100” 100m Sport Diver from November of ‘78. The Seiko 7546 housed within is quite literally a quartz driven version of the venerable 6309. With the case back removed, one look tells you all you need to know about early Seiko quartz movements. They were not plastic disposable machines to be quickly swapped out at the first sign of an issue, but beautifully, if not overly engineered movements with jeweled pivots, precisely machined plates, and streamlined circuitry. Removing the dial and hands reveals a calendar and keyless works that could easily be mistaken for its mechanical counterpart. Rather than cousins, these two calibres are brothers. One battery driven, and one spring driven, each as capable as they are impressive. This 603F variant features a soft, matte green/black dial set deeply behind a matching 60 minute chapter. The markers are large luminous plots with printed frames at 6, 9, and 12. The bi-color hands appear to float above the dial, and the silver second hand is the same arrow design later used on the 7A28 chronographs. A dodecagonal friction bezel with a chamfered edge tops the case, and the “count up” markings are black enamel inlay. The case is a hooded tonneau with sharp angles and crisp lines, and it’s attached to the original integrated flat three link bracelet. The case back and crown are both screw down with ample threading for a secure closure. It’s unpolished and completely original right down to the hardlex crystal, and appears nearly unworn. Only a few slight signs of wear are visible on the bracelet. It ships with the original inner and outer box, cuff, and standing price tag, as well as the original receipt of purchase dated August 25th, 1979. It has been fully serviced, a fresh battery installed, and is keeping perfect time. The bracelet may have been sized, but will accommodate up to an 8” wrist. With several variants, including JDM “Silver Wave” iterations, these early quartz Sport Diver’s are a perfect entry point to vintage Seiko, and this one in particular is sure to be a fast favorite on any roster.
