The build quality and design layouts of Seiko’s early Pulsar offerings is undeniable. They present a real opportunity to acquire top quality Seiko engineering at Pulsar’s bargain prices… for now. We’d urge you to set aside any notion of its present day entry level offerings, and discover the sweet spot of the vintage market offered up by late 70’s, and early 80’s Pulsar. If you’re still not convinced, consider this 100m Sport Diver from December of 1980. If it looks vaguely familiar, that’s because the dial color and finish is the same application as one other watch in the vintage Seiko stable (yeah…, that one). The dial is immaculate, and it’s set with polished applied markers with black striping to match the bi-color hands. The second hand should also be familiar as it was an early use of the same style that would later be featured on the 7A28 sport models. The day/date window has an applied frame, and the “Pulsar” badge and logo are polished and applied as well. Framing the dial is a steep golden chapter with an hour and minute track that rises to meet the mineral crystal. The knurled bezel is well proportioned and is a friction style that rotates smoothly in either direction. The insert goes back to the well in a “Pepsi” color combo, though the red portion of this one has faded to an opaque pink. It shows little wear and all the markings are clearly legible. The case architecture is classic Seiko with an “all lug” appearance, and a screw down crown at the three. The case back is also screw down, and both secure tightly with ample threading. It’s all original, unpolished, and the movement has been cleaned, lubricated, and a fresh battery installed. We’ve paired it with a navy “Tropic Sport” style strap that partners perfectly with the dial and bezel, and provides a comfortable fit and finish. We’re certain that interest in these early pulsar models will continue to grow, and suggest getting on board early while there are still bargains to be found.
