1984 Seiko 7A28-7020 Quartz Chronograph Two-Tone “Black Bond”
1984 Seiko 7A28-7020 Quartz Chronograph Two-Tone “Black Bond”
At a time when quartz meant LCD displays and designs so far removed from tradition that they were hardly recognizable as wrist watches, Seiko took a step backwards in order to bring watch design forward. The 7A28 was the worlds first analog quartz chronograph, and to say they got it right is an understatement. Solid construction, “fly by wire” circuitry, and a hefty 15 jewels make for a finely tuned machine that can be adjusted to dial in performance, and allows for the replacement of worn components. The same can’t be said for most of the quartz movements seen even today. The design allows for three sub registers: one measuring minutes, another is the designated seconds, and lastly a tenth of a second totaler. The center seconds is stationary unless the chronograph is engaged, at which point it measures elapsed seconds for the chronograph. If you are unfamiliar with this movement, we can all but bet that a little research will have you ready to track down your own. This example from June of ’84 is the inverse color way of the white dialed variant featured in the James Bond film, “A View To A Kill.” Because of this association, many enthusiasts refer to it as the “Black Bond.” By any name, it certainly demands attention. Against the brushed steel finish, the polished gold details are a standout feature. Due to the typical wear through seen on two-tone models of this age, we have pretty high standards for what we’re willing to offer. This one is as good as it gets beyond New Old Stock territory. Outside of a few very small portions on the lower outer links, the gold plating is completely intact with no visible wear. The bezel, pushers, and crown are bright yellow, and highlight the black and gold contrast of the spotless dial and hands. Reminiscent of the earlier 6138 “Black Panda,” the dial is a matte brown/black with striking all gold printing and applied baguette markers. The case is unpolished with crisp factory finishes and corners, and it’s completely original, right down to the hardlex crystal. With only a few very minor blemishes, we thought it best to just leave it in place. Post service, and with a fresh battery installed, it’s keeping perfect time, and the chronograph functions are operating as intended. If a steel and gold stunner with a dark side is missing from your rotation, this one will not disappoint.
