As production of the 6309 ended in 1988, Seiko introduced it’s next generation of 150m sport divers by way of the 7002. It is the direct predecessor to the recently discontinued SKX line, and owning one can feel like the perfect blend of past and present. This example from June of ‘90 is outstanding and shares many similarities with the final 6309 production models. The case is unpolished and shows minimal wear throughout. It’s original finishes and bevels are still quite crisp and clearly visible. The bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with a firm “click,” and wear to the insert is scattered and light. The matte black dial is near perfect, and features rectangular markers at every hour except the 12. There, two opposing triangles meet at a point just above the silver printed SEIKO logo. The luminous material, in this case promethium, has developed a metallic silver patina that is distinct to these models. The hands are recognizable in design, sharing the same characteristics as previous models. There is no degradation or discoloration in the luminous, and the original polished finish is free of oxidation or corrosion. The oversized crown is positioned at four o’clock between to large guards, and along with the case back, screws down tightly with ample threading. It’s completely original including the hardlex crystal which we’ve opted to leave in place as it exhibits only a few very light blemishes. The date can be quickset via the crown, and post service, this one is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a replacement Z-22 flat vent strap for a fit and finish very close to the original that feels and looks great on the wrist. With so many examples fitted with modified and aftermarket parts, opportunities to own an original example in this condition are becoming increasingly rare. Don’t wait on this one.
