As production of the 6309 ended in 1988, Seiko introduced it’s next generation of 150m sport divers by way of the 7002. It is the direct predecessor to the recently discontinued SKX line, and owning one can feel like the perfect blend of past and present. This example from October of ‘92 is outstanding and shares many similarities with the final 6309 production models. The case is unpolished and shows only light wear throughout. It’s original finishes and bevels are still quite clean and crisp. The bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with a firm “click,” and wear to the “count up” insert is scattered and light. The dial is flawless. It’s matte black with rectangular markers at every hour except the 12. There, two opposing triangles meet at a point just above the silver printed SEIKO logo. The luminous material, in this case promethium, has developed a metallic silver patina that is distinct to these models. The hands are recognizable in design, sharing the same characteristics as previous diver models. There is no degradation or discoloration in the luminous, and the original polished finish is free of oxidation or corrosion. A large screw down crown sits at the 4 o’clock position between two protruding crown guards. The case back bears the signature “Tsunami” logo at center, and the lighting bolt marking its Daini heritage. It’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and a fantastic example of Seiko’s fourth generation pro diver. The date can be quickset via the crown, and post service, this one is keeping near perfect time. We/be paired it with a gray “Tropic” style strap that complements the hour marker patina, and offers a comfortable fit and finish. With so many examples fitted with modified and aftermarket parts, and demand from collectors ever rising, opportunities to own an unmolested original are becoming increasingly rare. Don’t miss this one.
