1996 Seiko 7S26-0029 Automatic 200m Pro Diver (SKX173) US Only
With its unceremonious discontinuation in 2019, it was only a matter of time before an SKX found its way to my bench to be restored and offered up as a neo-vintage must have, and this 7S26-0029 (SKX173) from December of ‘96 is exactly how we wanted to mark the occasion. Seiko’s 5th generation core diver, the SKX was the follow up to the 7002 model, and was introduced in a crossover period in 1996. In fact, the very last 7002 transitional divers of that era even share their 200m depth rating and smaller crystal diameter with their successor. The shift was fairly seamless for most, and the SKX became an instant icon for value driven customers looking to acquire a near bulletproof “tool” beater with an established pedigree. For nearly 23 years, the SKX in its numerous variants served as the doorway across the threshold of mechanical watches for thousands of budding enthusiasts, and remains one of the most popular dive watches ever created. So ubiquitous is this Seiko classic, an entire cottage industry of modding components exists to service the individualized whims of its ever growing community of owners. For me, though, nothing beats an original, and that’s why our first SKX offering is the 173. Unlike the internationally available 007 and its similarities to the 7548 divers, the 173 carried over the familiar layout from the 7002 and slim 6309 models before it, and was only available for the US market. Built-in heritage and smaller production makes it the perfect candidate for our introduction, and this clean, early example is ready to go to work… or play. It’s all original aside from a replacement crystal, and the 7S26A is keeping near perfect time post service. The factory brushed finish on the lugs is crisp, and the beveled corners are clearly defined. The case back and crown screw down tightly, and both with ample threading. Paired with an olive drab “tropic” style strap for a comfortable and versatile fit and finish, it’s bound to make a regular appearance in any rotation.
