1972 Seiko 66-5019 Manual Wind Gold Tone Tank “Time Only” (Saleman’s Sample Build Out)

During the 1970’s and 80’s, Seiko sales representatives would present new product to retailers by way of non-working samples. They would include the case, dial, hands, and crystal. Seiko understood the importance of a retailer being able to make the best judgement possible when choosing upcoming products for their showcases and clients. Several times a year, I will encounter a handful of these samples, and acquire them for parts. Every once in a while, I’ll get the uncontrollable urge to build one out to a finished complete and working watch. This 66-5019 sample from February of ‘72 is just such an example. With the case components in near mint condition, I just had to see this beauty reach its potential. Due to the wear through typically associated with gold tone watches, we typically shy away from anything short of NOS goods. This unblemished “tank” with a color changing satin finished dial has held my eye for more than a year while I waited for a donor piece to find its way to me. That moment recently arrived and allowed me to build out this one to Seiko’s original specifications, and post service, the hand wound 66 movement I installed is keeping near perfect time. Paired with an oiled Sienna suede, the dial just sings. You’d be hard pressed to find a cleaner casual. All components are genuine Seiko, and the only detail that denotes it began its life as a salesmen’s sample is the “sample” engraving on the case back. If you’re looking for an affordable and stylish entry point into vintage Seiko, this is your “golden” opportunity.
