1964 Seiko 572290 Manual Wind “Crown” 21j
Seiko’s Crown line, along with the Marvels, evolved into the Kings and Grands that unquestionably put the brand on the map as a top tier manufacturer. In the early 1960’s the Crown was just that; a representation of Seiko’s technical prowess packed neatly into a crisp mid-century package. This example from February of 1964 is still the timeless icon Seiko envisioned for their brand more than 60 years ago. The dial is a clean silver sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish, and just two lines of printed text. The applied baguette markers are beveled, and polished to a mirror finish. The hour and minute hands are broad and beveled Dauphines with a high polished finish, and sloped tapering. The case is a classic layout with a slim profile of just over 10mm. Leggy lugs and a thin polished bezel give this one an “all dial” appearance beneath the domed acrylic. The hand wound cal. 560 is a 21 jewel, finely finished movement that, post service, is keeping time to within a few seconds per day. We’ve paired it with an oiled Sienna suede for a versatile fit and finish that’s ready for dressing up or down. Vintage minimalism at its finest, it is deserving of its name, and a spot in any rotation.
