1971 Seiko 6139-7002 Automatic Chronograph “Decimal”
1971 Seiko 6139-7002 Automatic Chronograph “Decimal”
With the majority of the 6139 line up built around racing and sports oriented layouts, a casual departure with broad appeal is a welcomed addition for many collectors. The versatility of the 7002 makes it a perfect vintage chronograph for those looking to find one watch for all occasions. The case offers a slimmer profile than most of its counterparts, and its soft tonneau shape is comfortable and well proportioned. At 41mm, it’s not overpowering, but has plenty of presence on the wrist. The bezel is polished and beveled for a clean finish, and beneath it is a matte sunburst dial with balanced text and color. This example from April of ‘71 is an absolute stunner. The dial is a spotless steel gray, and at its edge is a dual track of black block minutes, and subtle orange 1/5 second hashes. As it’s an early variant, it carries the 70 meter “Resist” designation that creates a visual balance against the day date window. A fixed inner decimal chapter frames it all, and offers perhaps one of the most practical functions a chronograph can offer. Dividing a minute into 100 equal parts allows for determining anything from sports statistics to production cost at the press of a pusher. The original luminous material on the markers and hands has developed a light and even patina, and the polished steel and black hour and minute hands offer easy legibility. As the chronograph sweep hand was missing on arrival, I installed a matched set of genuine and correct NOS Seiko replacements. They are a standout in bright orange with no fading. The 6139A is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. We’ve paired it with a genuine and period correct Seiko/Stelux rolled link “fishbone” bracelet for a seamless finish very close to the original. It’s unpolished with the original finishes still intact, and all original aside from a replacement crystal. Though it easily plays well with others in a rotation, it’s ready to be the only watch you’ll ever need.
