For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. For collectors, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From February of 1972, this stunner is exactly what we mean. The flawless “Resist” dial is a crisp navy blue with a velvety textured finish. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and is a clean bright white throughout. The rotating inner bezel has faded to an even ashen gray, and the silver markings are still crisp and easily legible. The hour and minute batons have retained their bright polished finish, and clean luminous in line with the hour markers. The chronograph hands are a fiery red/orange that is both complementary, and in perfect contrast to the dial. The outer bezel in crisp, metallic red and blue shows only light wear, and no color fade. The case is unpolished with crisp corners, and the original finishes are still clearly visible. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a smooth brown leather with white stitching that partners nicely with the dial and hands, and provides a comfortable fit and finish on the wrist. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it’s an absolute head turner that’s sure to be the new front runner on any roster.
