1976 Seiko 6138-0049 Automatic Chrograph “Bullhead”

1976 Seiko 6138-0049 Automatic Chrograph “Bullhead”

$1,050.00

Seiko's 6138 was the sophomore follow up to the 6139 and added a few features lacking in the former. In addition to a rolling 12 hour register for the chronograph, it could now be manually wound at the crown, and the day and date could be quick set independently via the crown. The "bullhead" earned its nickname when Seiko decided to rotate the movement 90 degrees, which positioned the crown and chronograph pushers at the top of the case creating a resemblance to a bull's horns. At nearly 44mm, it lives up to its beastly sobriquet, and the gradient brown dial, gold sub registers and "root beer" bezel offer an excess of 1970's color palette appeal. This example from July of ‘76 is incredible. The dial is absolutely flawless, and the luminous material on the hands and markers is still bright white and free of degradation. The hour and minute hands show no chipping or paint loss, and the chronograph sweep is a vivid and bright yellow. The bezel insert is perfect without any wear or color fade. The case is unpolished, and with only light visible wear, the original factory finishes are crisp throughout. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and comes attached to the original “Fishbone” bracelet with zero stretch or stress between the links. It’s keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. If you’ve been waiting for the right “Bull” to add to your own stable, it won’t get any better than this.
