1987 JDM Seiko 6309-729A Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Slim Turtle”
1987 JDM Seiko 6309-729A Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Slim Turtle”
For vintage Seiko lovers, the 6309-7040/49 “Turtle” diver is a must for any collection. It is still Seiko’s top selling diver to date, and even inspired a reissue in 2015. It’s instantly recognizable, and a personal favorite. Production began in 1976 and continued through 1988 when Seiko transitioned over to the 7002 model. However, in 1982 a slimmer 6309 150m diver emerged, and likely served as an evolutionary testing ground for the next generation of Seiko divers. Enter the 6309-729X, or what many collectors refer to as the “Slim Turtle.” A shorter production run paired with a smaller market distribution meant fewer to go around, and fewer still of this scarce JDM variant. In fact, this example from November of ‘87 is an HCV first. The dial is immaculate. The soft matte black is even throughout, and the printed text is crisp with negligible fading of the bright red “water resist” lettering. Setting it apart from its export counterpart, the jewel count of 17 is noted on the dial just beneath the depth rating, and it carries the correct 747P R dial code. The luminous plots show no degradation, and have developed the signature silver patina of the latter promethium dials. The hands exhibit some oxidation, but have kept their original luminous windows, and we’ve applied a thin layer of luminous binder to the back of the hands for added support and protection. The bezel rotates smoothly with a firm “click” of the ball bearing in either direction, and the insert shows only light wear with the original lume pip and acrylic lens still in place. The case is unpolished, and the factory corners finishes are still intact. The 6309A is keeping near perfect time post service, and the crown and case back both screw down tightly with ample threading. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and we’ve paired it with a Seiko GL-831 flat vent composite strap for a an original fit and finish. An influential piece of Seiko diving history with JDM bonafides, this one is sure to be a highlight in any collection,
