1970 Seiko 6119-7163 70m Sport Diver “Sushi Roll” (Proof)
There was no shortage of amazing Sport Divers offered by Seiko from the late 60’s and through the 1970’s. Beefy cases and an array of colors and designs made for several memorable pieces, most of which still top the lists of collectors today. This example from February of ‘70 is one of the many designs that earned a nickname in the collecting community, and is affectionately referred to as the “Sushi Roll” diver. It was available in a array of dial colors including blue, yellow, a rarely seen green, and of course black. The reasoning behind it’s name becomes immediately apparent after a close inspection of the distinctive applied hour markers. The cylindrical monuments finished with crisp bevels and filled with luminous material bear a strong resemblance to a sliced and plated sushi roll. Set against a matte black back drop, they are the focal point of this classic Seiko sport diver. Framing the dial is a rotating inner “count up” style bezel in black with silver markings and a substantial geometric lume plot at zero. The hands are polished batons striped in black with well proportioned luminous, and the blaze orange sweep can’t be missed. The only other spot of color is the “Sports” designation in a rich gray blue. The case is saucer shaped and appears to have been lightly polished at some point, the crown has been replaced, and a wide flat bezel surrounds what appears to be the original “hardlex”crystal. The inner bezel rotates freely in either direction via the crown, and post service, the 6119C is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a premium olive drab NATO that works extremely well with the black dial, and provides a comfortable fit and finish.
