The other "Baby Panda"..... Seiko's Danai factory produced some of the greatest chronographs you've never heard of in the early 1970's. The 70XX "fly backs" were innovative in design, and some of the finest looking timepieces Seiko ever released. The rarest of these, it's mostly agreed, are the 7018-7000, single register "Pandas." Though smaller in stature than their 61XX counterparts, what they lack in size (37.5mm) they make up for in performance. A true "fly back," meaning that the chronograph can be reset to zero without having to first stop the mechanism (the reset pusher can be pressed and released to begin totaling again while the sweep hand is in motion) is a complication typically found on only the most complex Swiss chronograph movements today. This example from October of '71 is an absolute stunner. The dial is a lacquered sunburst finish in a silvery white, and just above the six o'clock marker is the iridescent black sub register made up of tight concentric rings with a fat "teardrop" counter. At the dial's edge is a satin silver minute and second track with black printing. The case is quite angular with all surfaces converging into points at the lug tips, and attached is the original bracelet with alternating vertical and horizontal brush finishes. Truly, a rare treat to own, and completely original down to the hardlex crystal showing only a few light marks.
