For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. For collectors, though, one these stands out as a “Grail,” and is often the missing piece of a three piece puzzle. The “Silver Pogue” is nothing shy of a needle in a haystack. So rare in fact, that for many years, some collectors even doubted their existence. I can assure you that not only does this example from March of ‘71 exist, it is stunning, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal and strap. The dial is mesmerizing. A lacquered silver sunburst that has to be seen to truly be appreciated. This one is nearly perfect, but for a very small scuff in the lacquer just above the SEIKO logo that can only be seen at specific angles. The original luminous material is still bright white and free of damage or degradation. The inner bezel is a deep contrasting black, shows no fading from UV exposure, and rotates smoothly in either direction via the crown. The polished hands have no corrosion or oxidation, and the luminous material is a clean bright white throughout. The chronograph hands are the correct red/orange associated with this model, though the sweep does have a minor blemish at center. The metallic red and blue tachymetric bezel shows only very light wear, and no fading in the color saturation. The case has light wear, but it is unpolished with crisp corners and the original factory finishes still intact. The 6139A is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. We’ve paired it with a two-piece RAF NATO in silver that works beautifully with the dial, and is comfortable on the wrist. I think it goes without saying, but I’m going to say it... this one won’t be around long.
