A welcome departure from Seiko’s typically sporty offerings in the 6139 lineup, the 8002 is a perfect representation of what every modern manufacturer is trying to accomplish with a throwback design. This stunner, however, is the real deal. From May of 1971, it’s a tasty tonneau style with rich colors, great lines, and an historic movement. The dial is a warm khaki blue bordered with a deep orange 1/5 second track that nicely ties it to the chronograph hands. The matte silver sub register makes for great contrast, and the long and lean luminous markers have settled into a warm even patina throughout. Atop the unpolished case is an inset and well proportioned bezel that’s finished with a glossy black inlay. As the dial denotes, its an earlier “Resist” variant that’s equipped with Seiko’s first iteration of their premier automatic chronograph movement, the 6139A. A beast of a calibre, it features a column wheel design with a vertical clutch, and this one performing flawlessly post service. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and it’s keeping time to within just a few seconds per day. We’ve paired it with a distressed black leather to bring out the bezel, and provide a clean, casual finish.
