It's good to be the King... Following Taro Tanaka's "Grammar of Design," approach to case architecture, the King Seikos of the late 1960's and 70's are as much art as they are wristwatch. Minimalist and slightly industrial, there is an unexpected beauty in the abundance of corners and angles that make up the highly reflective surfaces of these elegant timepieces. This example from May of '72 is beautifully preserved, and stunning on the wrist. The dial is a pearlescent silver with a subtle sunburst breaking through the glossy lacquered finish. The applied markers are polished, and finished in black along the top. The sword style hands are tapered to a fine point with a fine black stripe through the center. The days of the week are in English, and of course Japanese, and the freshly serviced 5626 hums along at 28800 bph, creating a smooth sweep of the second hand. Paired with a black distressed leather, this piece is on the formal side of casual, but built to handle most any occasion.
