For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. This example from December of ‘73 is in overall fantastic condition and has great character. The golden sunburst dial is mesmerizing. The polished hour markers and hands sport a mirror finish, and the original luminous material bears only a slight patina. Due to the process in which these dials were manufactured, oxygen can penetrate the lacquer finish and get to the layer of silver beneath the paint and cause oxidation. This often appears as dark specks on the dial, and commonly a dark ring around the sub register. That occurrence has given this Pogue a “freckled” appearance that lends to it’s vintage appeal. The rotating inner bezel is still a vivid yellow and rotates freely in either direction via the crown. The tachymetric bezel shows only slight wear, and a light but even color fade through the red portion. The case is crisp and unpolished with the original finishes still intact. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are smooth and responsive. We’ve paired it with a dark brown distressed leather that showcases the dial and offers comfort and versatility on the wrist. A true Seiko icon, it’s a must have for any collection.
