1977 JDM Seiko 6139-8040 “Speed Timer” Automatic Chronograph
1977 JDM Seiko 6139-8040 “Speed Timer” Automatic Chronograph
With no export counterpart, the 8040 Speed Timer is a slick JDM stunner dripping in vintage appeal. The case styling is right out of a 1970’s automotive ad with rolled hooded lugs, tapered corners, and cleanly flared edges. The slightly inset bezel surrounds the original hardlex crystal, and beneath that is a gradient blue sunburst dial that can’t go unnoticed. The minute register is finished in deep green with a soft gray border. The applied markers are polished split baguettes with black inlay to match the slim tapered baton style hands. The chronograph hands in orange and white are easily legible, and add even more color to this eye catching chronograph. It comes attached to the original “H” link bracelet with the Speed Timer clasp making it completely original from top to bottom. The crystal has a small scuff near the six o’clock position, but was otherwise too nice not to leave in place. All of the original finishes on the case and bracelet are still visible, and overall this watch has aged beautifully. The 6139B is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp. An undeniably vintage racing chronograph that’s sleek and aerodynamic, and sure to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
