1977 Seiko 6138-0049 Automatic Chronograph "Bullhead" (Full Kit)
1977 Seiko 6138-0049 Automatic Chronograph "Bullhead" (Full Kit)
Seiko's 6138 is the sophomore release to the 6139 and adds a few features lacking on the former. In addition to a rolling 12 hour register for the chronograph, it could now be manually wound at the crown, and the day and date could be quick set independently. The "bullhead" earned it's name when Seiko decided to rotate the movement 90 degrees within the case, and position the crown and chronograph pushers at the top of the case creating a resemblance to a bull's horns. At nearly 44mm, it is truly a beast, and the gradient brown dial, gold sub registers and "root beer" bezel offer an excess of 1970's appeal. This example from March of ‘76 is fantastic. The dial is perfect, and the luminous material on the hands and markers have developed a beautiful khaki patina. The hour and minute hands show no chipping or paint loss, and the chronograph sweep is still a vivid and bright yellow. It is unpolished, completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and is even still attached to the original “Fishbone” bracelet. Unbelievably, this “Bullhead” comes as an incredibly rare ‘full kit.’ In tow will be the original inner and outer boxes and cuff, original Seiko factory warranty booklet, original 6138 “Seiko Chronograph” instruction booklet, and the original Seiko hang tag still in it’s plastic sleeve. It’s keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. For the collector, it doesn’t get any better than this.
