The Seiko 5 series was introduced in 1963, and began a legacy that still thrives today. The Sportsmatic was the first to carry the 5 logo, and represented an affordable to approach to quality timepieces. Built on 5 specifications, it was a watch built for the “every man (or woman)” looking for a watch that not only looked great, but could be as dependable as it was comfortable. The requirements are an automatic movement, water resistant case, single window day/date display, recessed crown at the four o’clock position, and a rugged, dependable build. This example from December of ‘64 hits them all, and after five and a half decades, it’s still living up to it’s expectations. The dial is a silvery white sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish. It’s aged beautifully, though there is a slight blemish between the 7 and 8 o’clock markers. The markers themselves are applied baguettes with a split center and polished finish. The hands are broad dauphines that are easy to read and well proportioned. The case is a classic affair with contoured lugs and a thinner profile. The bezel and case back are stainless steel, but the mid case is steel plated. The upper surface has aged extremely well, but some plating loss and wear can be seen on the lower side. The 6618 is keeping time to within a few seconds per day post service, and allows for quickset of the date. The day can be changed semi-quickset. We’ve paired it with a black distressed leather to contrast the dial, and in keeping with it’s mid-century style. As it was meant to be an affordable classic, we’ve priced it accordingly and don’t expect it will be around for long.
