1964 Seiko 69799 Sportsmatic “Silver Wave” 30m Proof
1964 Seiko 69799 Sportsmatic “Silver Wave” 30m Proof
Most would consider the 62MAS Seiko’s first true diver, and as it was rated to a depth of 150m, it was most certainly their first attempt at a submersible with as much function as it had form. Prior to that historic release, though, Seiko offered a truly stunning light diver series by way of the “Silver Wave” models. They are at the very root of Seiko’s passion for dive watches, and were even the first to bear that familiar “Tsunami” logo on the case back. This example from September of 1964 represents the second generation of that series, and to have found one in this condition is unbelievable. It is completely original aside from a replacement crystal. The unpolished case is classically styled with tapered, beveled lugs, and a round case with a thinner profile. The original crown is a large knurled style that protrudes from the four o’clock position, and in addition to setting the time, it can be used to rotate the inner countdown style bezel. The dial is nearly perfect. A charcoal sunburst with polished applied markers that’s bordered by the black and white internal bezel. All of the luminous material is the original and has developed a soft cream patina. The broad dauphine hands are tapered to a fine point, and still retain the original luminous as well. The case back is the etched style that typically didn’t survive the rigors of daily wear, especially after more than 50 years of service, but this example still shows all of its original markings, and with only light wear throughout. The 2451 housed inside is a workhorse automatic that is keeping nearly perfect time post service. Opportunities to own an early Silver Wave become fewer by the day, and an example such as this one is almost unheard of. This watch is a true opportunity that likely wont be repeated. We’ve paired it with a dark brown distressed leather that provides great contrast and a comfortable finish.
