Seiko’s “Presmatic” line, so named for it’s quickset feature (a hexagonal button within the crown that allows for instant date change), was a showcase in technical achievement, eventually culminating in a few high beat models that were the western market cousins of the JDM King Seiko Line. This early example from September of ‘68 also had a domestic market counterpart known as the Seikomatic-P. Both were short lived with a production range of only about two years, but either are certainly a worthwhile addition to any collection. The 5106 is packed with 33 jewels, all of which are functional, that provide near friction free performance across the entire movement. It can be manually or automatically wound, has hacking seconds, and an instant, rather than rolling, date change. If the specs haven’t already convinced you, the styling will. The dial is a stunning silver sunburst beneath a lacquer finish with heavily detailed applied markers. There is a small hairline blemish just below the upper printing in the lacquer, but it does not break the surface of the dial. The baton hour and minute hands are finished to match, and a slender sweep counts the seconds. The Presmatic badge sits prominently at mid-dial above the six o’clock marker, and a framed day/date window at three. The case features classic architecture with a flair for detail through mixed finishes and smooth contours. A thin, well balanced bezel frames the dial, though it has a small nick near the top. A screw down case back protects the movement, and it comes attached to the original bar link bracelet with a bark finish. The bracelet adds tons of vintage appeal, though we’re confident that the right leather strap could add another level of sophistication. It is unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, it is keeping near perfect time. It is as much presence as it is performance, and sure to be a fast favorite in any collection.
