1973 Seiko 6119-6023 Automatic 5 Sports 70m Sport Diver (Resist)
I will go on record saying that Seiko’s 6119 Sport Divers from the mid 70’s are easily one of the best values on the vintage market. For those after a sporty, tool watch that’s everything but cumbersome on the wrist, the 6023 may be the perfect addition. At 38mm, it’s incredibly comfortable and packs pounds of features into a tight package. This example from January of ‘73 is phenomenal. The matte black dial is perfect, and the original luminous plots are well proportioned and free of any color or degradation. A spot of color resides in the baby blue “Sports” designation, which contrasts nicely with the bright red “lollipop” sweep. The hours and minutes are counted on polished batons with bright white luminous that makes them easy to spot at a glance. Framing the dial is an angled inner “count up” bezel which can be rotated via the crown. The case is a classic tonneau with crisp corners, sharp lines, and the original finishes still clearly visible. The 6119 driving the hands is a true seiko workhorse that’s both durable and reliable. Post service it’s keeping near perfect time, and ready for many more years of peak performance. We’ve paired it with a black RAF NATO that nicely complements the dial, and highlights it’s amazing condition. A better bang for your vintage loving buck will be hard to find.
