For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From January of ‘73, this example has great patina and tons of character without sacrificing performance. The yellow sunburst dial is stunning, and has developed an almost uniform golden “honey” color throughout. Due to the process in which these dials were manufactured, oxygen can penetrate the lacquer finish and get to the layer of silver beneath the paint and cause oxidation. This often appears as dark specks on the dial, and commonly a dark ring around the sub register. On this example, a few of these ‘freckles’ can be seen around the 2 o’clock marker, and near the 12. The hour and minute hands have some light oxidation that only just subdues their polished finish. The original luminous material throughout has developed a heavy patina that we feel suits it’s character, so it has gone untouched.  The chronograph hands are bright red, though some chipping and paint loss is visible, and the inner rotating bezel has faded to softer canary yellow. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are only slightly intact. The outer bezel is a rich metallic red and blue, with only a small section of wear through visible along upper left section. We’ve paired it with an olive drab RAF NATO that perfectly complements the dial, and is comfortable for regular wear. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Aside from a replacement crown and crystal, it’s completely original, and a great opportunity to own a watch that has reached near “grail” status among collectors.
