For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From January of ‘73, this is a fantastic example overall. The yellow sunburst dial is nearly perfect. Due to the process in which these dials were manufactured, oxygen can penetrate the lacquer finish and get to the layer of silver beneath the paint and cause oxidation. This often appears as dark specks on the dial, and commonly a dark ring around the sub register. On this example, only a couple of these “freckles” are visible. One between the 8 and 9 o’clock markers, and one minuscule point just to the right of the 9.  The hour and minute hands are free of oxidation, but the luminous has some color around the edges. The original luminous material on the markers has only a light patina, and on a couple of the markers there appears to be some loss of material, though not enough that there is complete wear through. The chronograph hands are bright red showing only a single scratch at the center of the sweep, and the inner bezel shows no fading from exposure. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still intact. The outer bezel is a rich metallic red and blue, with only a few minor signs of wear. We’ve paired it with a silver RAF NATO that lets the dial do the talking, and is comfortable for regular wear. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Aside from a replacement crown and crystal, it’s completely original, and a great opportunity to own a watch that has reached near “grail” status among collectors.
