1976 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”
1976 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”
For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. This particular example hails from March of 1976, and arrived as part of a lot of several watches. The original mineral crystal was scratched and scuffed to the point that I was barely able to make out the golden yellow dial beneath. The crown, and one of the pushers had been missing for likely decades, and the exposure that allowed had obvious effects on the dial. The movement was very clean considering the circumstances, but the balance had been destroyed in what appeared to be an attempt at regulation that went horribly wrong. Still, I was unable to set it aside for parts, and decided that it deserved an opportunity to be brought back to life, and be an opportunity for someone that doesn’t mind a bit of character and wear, so long as they can own a “Pogue.” So that it could look it’s best, I conservatively touched up the luminous plots and hands as they were quite dark, as well as carefully repainted the minute register hand. It’s paint had fallen away almost entirely, and as it’s brass, was a bit difficult to track against the yellow dial. The missing pusher was replaced with an original, and the crown is the best replacement available. The inner bezel has faded to a canary yellow, but rotates smoothly in either direction. The outer bezel shows a bit of wear and fade, but the markings are clear and easily legible. I’ve attached it to an Uncle Seiko “H-Link” that suits it beautifully, and offers a comfortable fit and finish. With the balance replaced and the movement fully serviced, its now keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Even with a bit of wear, it’s still a killer chronograph with rich history, and a solid performer that’s sure to be enjoyed for many years to come.
